Trump Accounts: a plain-English guide

Trump Accounts are a new type of tax-advantaged investment account for children, created by the 2025 tax law commonly called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (Internal Revenue Code section 530A). The IRS describes them as a type of individual retirement account (IRA) set up for a child under 18. [1][4]

The $1,000 government contribution

The federal government provides a one-time $1,000 "pilot program" contribution to children who: [1]

  • are U.S. citizens,
  • were born from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2028, and
  • have a valid Social Security number.

You must elect the $1,000 contribution — even if Treasury automatically opened the account. Make the election on IRS Form 4547, which you can submit through the official Trump Accounts app, at TrumpAccounts.gov, or in your IRS Individual Online Account. [2] No pilot contribution is deposited before July 4, 2026. [3]

Who can contribute, and how much

  • Starting July 4, 2026, accounts can accept contributions from parents, family members, employers, and other eligible contributors. [5]
  • Contributions from family and others (plus employer contributions) share an aggregate limit of $5,000 per year, adjusted for inflation after 2027. The $1,000 pilot contribution, qualifying contributions from governments or 501(c)(3) charities, and rollovers don't count toward that limit. [4]
  • The child doesn't need earned income for contributions to be made. Contributors can't deduct contributions on their own taxes. [4]

Who runs the accounts

Treasury designated BNY (The Bank of New York Mellon) as financial agent to manage the initial accounts and help build the Trump Accounts app. Robinhood Securities serves as brokerage provider and initial trustee. [6][2] Treasury says activation emails come only from no-reply@TrumpAccounts.Treasury.gov, and families can use the official app or trumpaccount.com. [5]

⚠️ Avoid scams. Never give your child's SSN to anyone who calls, texts, or emails about a Trump Account. Go directly to TrumpAccounts.gov or IRS.gov/trumpaccounts. Official help line: 866-USA-4547 (866-872-4547). [2]

Quick checklist for parents

  1. Make sure your child has a Social Security number.
  2. Submit Form 4547 (app, website, or IRS online account) and check the $1,000 pilot box if your child was born 2025–2028.
  3. Watch for the activation email and finish setup in the official app.
  4. Decide whether family members will contribute, up to $5,000 per year combined.
  5. Ask your employer whether it offers Trump Account contributions.
