X Money: What It Is, Rates, and How FDIC Coverage Works

Important: X Money is not a bank. It is a payments product from X Payments LLC (part of X Corp), a licensed money transmitter. Customer funds are held at a partner bank, Cross River Bank, Member FDIC. "X Payments LLC is not an FDIC-insured bank. Deposit insurance only covers the failure of an insured bank." (@XMoney on X)

Unlike the banks in our directory, X Money doesn't appear in the FDIC's BankFind database, because it isn't a chartered bank. We cover it here because many people ask about it. This page is neutral and educational. BankNearMe.com has no relationship with X.

New to X Money?

What is X? X is the social network that used to be called Twitter. It is owned by X Corp.

What is X Money? It's a digital wallet and payments account inside the X app. You can send money to other X users, get direct deposits, earn a variable interest rate, and spend with a Visa debit card (the X Card). It is run by X Payments LLC, a licensed money transmitter. X Payments is not a bank. (AP News, @XMoney on X)

How to get started

  1. You need an X account in good standing, a verified U.S. mobile number, U.S. residency, and you must be 18 or older.
  2. Open the X app and tap Money in the sidebar.
  3. Verify your identity: legal name, date of birth and U.S. address, plus your Social Security number. Sources differ: some describe the full SSN, while Forbes reported the enrollment page asked for the last 4 digits. More may be requested if extra verification is needed.
  4. Once you're approved, a virtual X Card is created. You can order the physical metal card in the app.
  5. Link an outside bank account or debit card to add money, or set up direct deposit.

Eligibility and steps as reported by US Credit Cards 101 and Upstox. The in-app flow may differ.

Where your money is held

Your balance is held at Cross River Bank, Member FDIC. Larger balances can be swept to other FDIC-insured banks. This is "pass-through" insurance: it protects you if a partner bank fails, up to the limits. It does not protect you if X Payments itself fails or freezes your account. Coverage also depends on accurate record-keeping of who owns each dollar. (@XMoney on X, Cross River press release, Jan 23, 2025)

How it compares to a bank savings account or CD

A CD at an FDIC-insured bank or NCUA-insured credit union locks in a fixed rate, and the institution itself is insured. Top CDs pay around 5% APY as of Nov 4, 2026 (see best CD rates). X Money's rate is variable, and the provider is a fintech, not a bank. A bank savings account is directly insured and doesn't depend on a social media account. You can find FDIC-insured banks near you.
